Fun night with the au pairs....

I met the au pairs from Reading and Lancaster tonight at Buca di Beppo Italian Restaurant. It was really fun. People (ie. the waiter) find them all very entertaining...7 young people from all over the world. the place is a little bizarre but you remember going there, that's for sure:-)
Really really excellent service I might add and the salad was spicy! (but really good)

And YES! those are two boy au pairs!!!! Moritz and Tobi!

Yesterday I painted the kids table at Eastern Market with the kids...it is BEAUTIFUL! I can't believe I didn't have my camera. At one time there were about 10 kids painting it at once.

Very very hot here...I was enjoying our early fall!

Whales and stuff!

I had a dream of three whales!
Here is what they say that means:
'dreaming of a whale reflects a sense of calmness and spirituality within you"

The three of them looked like this Orca! It was startling because in the dream I was standing on the beach on a rainy day by myself and they appeared right at the shoreline.

I have had many revelations lately that are very positive to think of. My house is really coming together, I love being a local artist and spending time with a wonderful circle of artist friends, and I've realized since my son turned 3 last month, that I did a great job these last three years!!!! He helped make me who I am now...and helped define me. All the decisions I made for him or related to him or our family were hard at the time, but now things are fantastic and I am so proud of myself! It is hard to quit your job, but it was worth it...like a million dollars worth it! and I think now that pursuing my dream of being an artist has been so rewarding to me.
Whenever I had thought about "winning the lottery" (during my twenties as I sat in my cubicle as an admin) I would say, "I would be an artist." and the people around me would say, "you like art?" and it would floor me that they didn't even sense that about me!!!

I had a meeting with Lancaster Indie Arts on Wed...and what a wonderful thing it is to talk about art on a Wed morning at 11am and not weird office crap and politics! I feel like I'm in heaven. Like I did when I was at summer camp as a kid and we would be walking down a path to the Art Cabin for Art class.

It really really pays you back in a zillion different ways to just follow your heart, because when you do...things in your life will just move along..."swimmingly!" :-)

An Inspiring End to Summer 2008

We just got back from a long weekend, at my husbands families summer place...my son is playing there and having the time of his life, and it is so neat to think that he's the 5th generation of his family that has summered here- over a period of 99 years!!!! This is Anne's cottage- a woman that really fascinates me...so much so that I've knocked on her door twice, not knowing her, and have been invited in both times- and she just talks with me like she knows me.
This weekend I asked if I could photograph her place- I got some great shots that I will use for a special show Lancaster Indie Arts is putting together. a "Home" themed show benefiting Habitat for Humanity, my favorite cause these last couple of years.
Anne's home represents a dream summer home to me. And if you think the outside looks cool, the inside gets even better. She really inspired me this time. I love the clear colors of everything in her house. She is so cool, I can't stop thinking about the whole thing...She's sitting inside wearing a red sweater, eating her dinner, surrounded by the artiest stuff, and next to her are her books, and her flatscreen. A woman after my own heart!
We are really lucky to have a wonderful place like this cottage community to take my son to in the summer. With towering trees and little paths and fantastic porches...no traffic...it is a perfect place to spend summers in childhood.

What I'm into at the Moment:

Today I went to IKEA after dropping off Lena (who is flying to Orange County, Cali!!!!)
Oh I love IKEA! So clean. So modern. But people should pair their stuff with homemade things. This week is art art art...nesting nesting nesting...maybe a little Vacation and lots of time to think about me as an older mom...I want to look comfortable and arty all the time (for those of you in the world that think I'm annoying and insane for wanting to look "arty" go fly a kite!)
My idea of arty is a gorgeous gray sweater and old dark wash jeans, Dansko shoes, and cool glasses. Iwould love to have crazy curly red hair though...but the heavens above gave that to Erica:-)

Arrival of the Big Desk

I am now, officially, the proud owner of the biggest desk in the world. It wasn't really my goal to have such a huge desk...but I wanted a space for my fax machine, and I wanted it to have shelf space on the top of it.
The three boxes it came in, filled up my dining room and kitchen. It took me over an hour to bag up all the styro foam and fold the boxes that would have fit several kindergardeners in each!
Sitting here now at it...I feel like I'm at ski lodge or something in Colorado.
It's very nice, is real wood! (what a concept! :-) )and subsequently, it smells good!

Hi Grandma....

This has never happened to before, and I rather enjoyed it. For two days, in different areas of my house, I could smell my Grandma's perfume, her hallway, her upstairs, her house, her closets...every time I turned a corner in my own home.
I know it was her, because this hasn't happened before. And it continued and continued. I might as well have been back in her house. Hi Grandma!

I have been busy busy busy cleaning the house this weekend, and fixing up my guest room (a mess since DH decided to install insulation last winter in our crawl spaces, and used the guest room as project central.) In one week, Lena, my German au pair - for - a - week! will be here...transitioning to LA. So Max will have a friend, and I'll have someone to talk to. She reminds me of myself when I was a nanny. Max runs up to the guest room now and chatters, "Me in Ena room, yes, sleep here..."

Sonic

This is one of many crazy and fun things about my au pair job...
I can do things like...randomly take a girl from Switzerland who has only been in America for two weeks, to Sonic at 9pm for an ice cream blast. Her first time experiencing 1950's style car window restuarant service. Too bad the waitress wasn't wearing roller skates:-)
She laughed so hard when I pressed the button to order, and then said, "OH ONLY IN AMERICA!!!!"
It is so fun to experience things through my au pairs eyes. Americans in general don't get to hang out with people from a variety of other countries. Me on the other hand....I get to do this kind of stuff anytime...and just for the record, it's really cute when they accidently start talking to me in their native language. My au pair said, "I'm going to open my own drive-in, in Switzerland!!!" all smiles of course:-)

Back to painting furniture....

I have finally gotten a nice amount of work done on my "Night Night Sleep Tight Don't Let the Bedbugs Bite" bedside table. it's really cool. Pics are coming soon.
I want to finish it in the next couple days and then...get this...start painting an Etsy chair.
And yes...it will be Etsy ORANGE!

Max's Room

i think it's finished...I want to add a few of the
vehicles applique things to the road and hills-
I've been thinking this week, "boy, I really have to do some art, I'm slacking!" and then I remember that THIS is what I did this week :-) I think it's a special thing that I did for Max, and that feels good. He walks in his room and says , "Ta Da!"
it even looks cool from the hall! He doesn't know he's getting a train table for his birthday, it's replacing the little IKEA table.

Hit the Road mural...

I am nearing completion of Max's "Hit the Road" room, based on the bedding collection from Target- I've been working on this mural the past few days.
I will post more pics soon, but here's a little peek.
I based my paintings on the trees, etc in the print of the curtains, and the lamp.
Today I finished a couple of trees and he just sat in his bed and smiled, looking around the room. The cutest thing is when he's playing in there, it looks like he's in an outdoor cartoon- really cool:-)

Me and my beautiful au pairs!

I am so lucky that working with these girls is my job. From all around the world, my au pairs are from...Germany, Colombia, South Africa, Romania, Mexico, and Thailand. This was taken on a roof deck in Lancaster City Saturday night. They all have such a sweetness in their eyes, this pic is a keeper.

Quote of the day from my mom: "Don't look now...but that's the man that mugged me."

Earlier this year, my mom was mugged at 30th Street Station in Philadelphia on her way to Florida. The man was caught on surveillance and has already been to prison for a similar crime this year.
Today I met her at the train station and we made our way to court for the preliminary hearing.
Let me just say, that I had no idea we would have to sit in the small court room, in the pew type seats WITH the defendants! (no handcuffs on them, no lawyer next to them, just us and them HANGING OUT!) and that the judge would be late, by like an hour and a half...and me and my mom would be stared out by the mugger for that long. (and let me just add, that this is not a guy who randomly mugs people. He does it all the time, according to detectives is "a REAL BAD GUY and a lifelong criminal."
He kept leaving the court room and going out into the hall. There were plenty of cops around, but they weren't close enough when I headed to the ladies and there was Mr. Mugger alone in a hall and standing about 2 feet from me...do you think I was going into an empty restroom with him outside the door? think again!
Because a piece of evidence was missing the trial was postponed until September.
Don't worry Mr. Mugger, I'll be there so you can stare at me and my mom all you want again. We might be the last women you see for a long while.
If you are ever a victim or a witness in a case like this, bring someone and watch your back. We had to watch ourselves regarding what elevator we took, that we left the courthouse after he did, that we got a cab right away etc.

A Lobster in my shirt...and I didn't even KNOW IT!

(I took an online decorating style quiz. Can you believe I'm cottage/tuscany? I thought I was more modern or something, guess not!)

Oh here's the funny story:

I went to the auto store with Mr. French and Mr. French Jr....I looked down and my chest looked lumpy under my shirt. I thought, "what the heck, this isn't my necklace..." and in front of the male cashiers, out of pure curiosity, I reached down the front of my shirt and pulled out a 7 inch plastic toy lobster!!!!
That Max! He laughed his head off, and so did the cashiers!

Clean House Messiest Home in the Country aired tonight. I love this show. Did any of the locals catch the "dejazzd" box amongst the mess? That was kind of cool...in a way:-)

Beautiful weather here in Pennsylvania...I went hiking with my son yesterday. We threw stones in a river for half an hour. tonight we played in the water from the garden hose and ate popsicles.
Life couldn't get better:-)

DogStar Bookstore

Tomorrow I hang my work for the DogStar Bookstore LIA exhibit, that begins July 4. Originally I had planned to bring a few things I've made in the last couple months, as my inspiration was a bit low (but my housekeeping excitement was high!)
Then Friday came, and I'm typically excited to get creative on Fridays and during the weekend (don't ask me why, but I can really pound stuff out on those days of the week.)
On Friday I decided to paint "Carnival Night" and it's heaven to me. I am so happy because I've been making things I just love, and I don't care if no one else likes them! and isn't that how it should be? :-)
Then Saturday came, and H E R E' S the kicker: my Dad had bought me this giant "captains" chair a week ago and it's been in my studio (aka basement). So I decide to paint it for the DogStar event.
And then I'm at Lowes buying black paint, and up til 3am Saturday night, and working on it Sunday, and then at Lowe's twice today (Monday) buying sealer and more sealer, and painting and now the "Storyteller Chair" is sitting on my back porch with a fan blowing on it (that was a lot of paint and sealer, it's a BIG chair!) so hopefully it won't smell tomorrow at 10am!!!! when I bring it to the bookstore.
No pictures tonight, it's a secret. It is really a great match to my Buy Fresh Buy Local Chair, and they look cool together.
So here it comes....kind of nervewracking, whipping up an enormous painted folk art chair last minute.

I am (proudly) the newest member of Lancaster Indie Arts...a wonderful group of local artists that inspire one another and encourage the work of independent artists in Lancaster.

This is my bio:

I am an artist specializing in art made from salvaged things. I love using bold colors. At the age of 5, I wanted to be an artist, art teacher, and writer.

I grew up in an army family, and lived in Maryland, Alaska, Texas, Massachusetts, and moved to Pennsylvania the summer before my senior year of high school. My mother called us gypsies. Although my father was a Lt. Colonial, he was always extremely creative, as are many on that side of my family. As coal miners in the western part of Pennsylvania, they learned to use what they had. I was always fascinated that my godfather built 3 houses for fun out of salvaged building materials he picked up on his way to and from the mines.

As a child in Massachusetts, my mother signed me up for all sorts of art classes, and so I had after school pottery class, oil painting lessons, went to Art Camp at the prestigious Groton School, painted in the desert of New Mexico, and was in the "talented and gifted" artistic program at school, which I thought was insanely elite-ist but cool at the same time (as it enabled me to get out of class all day once a month and go to the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, or backstage at the Boston Symphony.)

In 1995 I graduated from Alvernia College, with a degree in Communication and a minor in Art. The school did not have an Art major, so I took all the art classes they offered, most of them taught by Sister Magnifica. In my final semester I interned, and hated working in an office and wearing suits. Later that spring, I accepted a position to spend the next year as a nanny to four children in Connecticut- in a house with over 1000 American folk art paintings. During that year I traveled to Maine, Seattle, the Hamptons, London, Switzerland and Rome with the family, and loved living amongst that much art!

Following that year, I spent the next ten working in offices (ugh). When I had my son at age 32, I decided to quit work and I started to pursue art again.

In 2007 I began selling my painted and decoupaged salvaged cabinet doors in downtown Lancaster at Eastern Market, and on Etsy. I have started to make smaller things using salvaged wood and house paints, and have sold my work at the Studio and Art Bar of York, at the Spoiled Silly Children's Boutique in Lititz, PA, at the Art is Negotiable Gallery in Lancaster, and at Senorita Burrita.

Look for two of my handmade cards in the upcoming book, "1000 Handmade Greetings" by Quarry Books.

My work is constantly evolving and I am adding more and more materials to my designs, including furniture, buttons, twigs, and wool, textiles, and paper.

Lovely lovely lovely weather day. I got out our camping tent and set it up in the backyard for my son. He was so excited he was shaking. It's super roomy inside and has screen windows on each side...we were lying on the floor of it, looking out at the trees and bunnies, with a nice breeze blowing...

Crazy clothes

Last night was the 12th anniversary of a car accident that nearly killed me. Each year when this time comes around, I feel a sense of nervousness, and I feel that I could be seconds away from the end. It's a chilling time for me, right when the weather starts to really heat up, ironically.
With no one knowing how long they will live, why do we spend years being uncreative with our clothes?
This year I have become more aware of my appearance in that way, and after being creative every day and loving it, it feels so odd to wear boring things and colorless things, and I realize how it will negatively effect me through the day.
Listening to people's reactions in the movie theater about Carrie's clothes in Sex and the City was so funny. Her character feels freedom to wear what she feels like.
Shouldn't life be more like that, and not so restrictive? why do people feel they have to be plain and pompous? it's kind of boring if you think about it.
if each day is more important than we realize, shouldn't our clothes be memorable and interesting to at least ourselves?

Upcycled Tin Can Pen Cup

This is a great example of how I've been inspired by other etsy artists, and their use of color. If you look at my favorites on etsy, all of them together are like eye candy. Looking at other peoples work and identifying what I am attracted too, has really helped me discover what I like.

Spending ten years in tan cubicles must have wreaked havoc on my mind :-).

Too Hot for Socks

oh my God it is HOT. Eastern Market was empty yesterday, but the chair I made with the kids turned out great. Inside the open building, I was just warm, but loading my car back up, crossing back and forth across King Street, I nearly blacked out from the heat.
(loading my car after a show, is like loading the luggage of a family of five for a two week trip).
Sometime, around 10:30pm I passed out in my bed. I awoke in my clothes at 11am, the house was a mess. I still had barrettes in my hair. :-)
It is still nearly 100 degrees outside. DH is removing my black dining room chandelier with handpainted poka dot lamp shades and replacing it with a ceiling fan, the air conditioner is on, curtains are closed and I am happy as can be inside cleaning and drinking gatorade.

Button

I was feverishly working on three little mini pieces today during Mr. French's nap- (wood block, painted, decoupaged with fabric creating my own flower, topped with felt tabs, and a twig for hanging).
I was eating graham crackers and going through my containers to find just the right button to finish them off...
I stopped suddenly, confused...was this a bit of my graham cracker or a button?
I almost ate a button!!!

I am going to teach a class to Girl Scouts in September (a recycling art project). If anyone wants to be an artist, but is worried about the cost of supplies, and that is hindering you, remembering that you can create neat things from found objects too!

City Arts Market at Eastern Market May 31, 2008

It was fun today, and a really great art selling day..despite the near tornado!!! I was sentimental, as my first day of ever selling my art was last year, opening day of Eastern Market...remember me on the sidewalk:-)
I am truly enjoying making things I love from things I find...things that would have been thrown away. I am really enjoying making new friends and seeing old Eastern Market area neighbors return...like the guy who wore orange pants last November to Community Arts Market, and today he looked kind of eccentric too. funny things like that. And also, I enjoy talking to the area residents...like the guy who's been clean for 18 months, etc...
I hope all those little girls love their custom name signs, I enjoyed making them.

It's Showtime...

Tomorrow is City Arts Market at Eastern Market, the opening day...9-3:00...
I am really excited to see everyone!
When I look at all the things I've painted since I was last there in December...it makes me laugh!
I have so many things- you should see my car right now, I'm loaded up like a gypsy...furniture nearly busting out the windows...
Also, I really worked up to the last minute. I never paint the day before a show, but today I made 10 magnets, 4 little girl things, put the wire back on a Mary plaque, made all the labels for my crosses.
I also am breaking tradition in that I always do a mock set-up before the big day, but I didn't this time, so I will see what it all looks like tomorrow.
And so much more color this year...everything looked neat at the Punk Rock Flea Market, but this stand will be twice as big, so I'll have fun at 8:15 in the morning laying it all out.
if anyone is coming by early, please bring Miss Maggie a croissant. :-)

Punk Rock Flea Market at The Chameleon Club

Thanks to everyone who came to my booth today- I hope all you buyers love your stuff! It's fun to think that there are (multiple!) people out there tonight hanging my art on their walls!!!!
It was really fun, and so good see everyone.

1000 Handmade Greetings

I received my acceptance email today from Rockport Publishers today for two of my handmade greeting cards- for their upcoming book, "1000 Handmade Greetings"
I made a few cards because I saw on Etsy that they were looking for original work for this book.

Lots of cool vibes tonight at Spoiled Silly children's boutique in Lititz, where I was the featured artist for 2nd Friday.
Thank you to you guys for buying my new necklaces!, to Kim for hosting me, and my good friends for showing up...it was a little bit of a party!
best of all was that Amy showed up, and I've missed her. Love you Ame. Party in her bathroom soon. Snacks will be served in style, and Amy will have washed her hair by then!

Old Lady Decorator now Aged 35

this is what I am calling myself now....Matt got me a doily dresser runner thing, with pretty stitching on it for my birthday and a pillow that says God Bless Our Home, both from Mommalicious in Lancaster...the pillow is black and has cool raised knitted letters on it.

This week is au pair week (meeting coming up this weekend at my house), so I'm preparing for that. Also, Friday find me at Spoiled Silly in Lititz as the featured artist, sporting my new "table" made from a gorgeous cabinet door, a pot rack, and four stair spindles.

Also this week, me and my Dad are installing beadboard paneling in my tiny hall (one of my birthday pressies). It will be lovely. Everyone will have to trust my artistic instincts. I CANNOT WAIT!!!! My house was built in 1952. It is missing some features it could have to make it "cuter"...for instance beadboard (afterall it is a Cape).
Last fall my Dad put in crown molding above my kitchen cabinets (another Maggie plan). I added a wallpaper border under that. Now now....everyone is saying, "OH NO. NOT A BORDER."
guess what???? I LOVE IT!!!!! borders help you match your towels! hooray!!!! they give a bland weird kitchen an identity. Yes, this is the same girl with an Alessi cookie jar, and all Fiestaware and name this and name that....but you know what? sometimes Grandma had it right!
Remember how you felt at Grandmas house? very very content? wanna know why? because everything was clean and it matched!

so the real test would be if you came to my house and you felt all warm and fuzzy while you ate roast beef at my table.

So back to the hall...it takes a lickin. I am up and down it all day. It has hardwood floors, and now yellow walls. Soon it will have beadboard and a chair rail. Soon after that???? it will have a french door revealing that yes we do have two more bedrooms up secret door number 3. If I can find a handmade stainglass hall light, I will buy it. And then I need to get two coordinating photographs or some art that I like.

mmmm. I CANNOT WAIT.

Nesting....

I am at work on a chair for Vinalhaven, Maine and a commission for Strawberry in Ithaca- so I'm sort of taking a small art hiatus these last few days. It started with the exciting pickup of my retro arm chair for the living room, FREECYCLED!!!!!...the exciting part was that they just said it was green and "older" and no one had claimed it after a week (worrisome), so they reoffered it, and me and my MIL went to pick in up in my BIL's toyota SUV....
we pulled up to the house, and saw it on the porch and it was like "hooray!!! it's COOL!" I am really enjoying it in the corner of my living room, it has changed the dynamic of the house.
as if that wasn't exciting enough :-), I got a bunch of stuff for my son, my sweet boy, and this is SO funny, now has so many shorts I think he needs a new bureau.
Rachel-Marie gave me the most beautiful art today and also a beautiful necklace she made, I am speechless about it, and YOU will see me in it, so just wait!!!!

in other news:
I have felt confused about my son's choice of school's in the coming years, and we went to the "Night of the Arts" at the city elementary by our house. The work was BEAUTIFUL!!!! and it lined all the walls- I kept thinking I could buy this or that.
What an old but interesting and pleasant school. It was built in the 1920's, and the tile work was so neat- the bathrooms were all different (they had the doors to them open:-) ) and I'm talking 5 or 6 different tile levels, all coordinating in each bathroom, very intricate (i'm not a tile expert, sorry if I don't make sense) ...big arched windows above stairwells, lots of stuff in the classrooms, and the kids are so diverse, and there were many arty moms, so that was very nice. I could even make friends!
My dear dear little son who loves music (and I swear will grow up to be a Maestro or a music teacher) left me and the audience of circling parents, to stand 2 feet away from the violinists playing; he stood there, chin down, and watched them by himself for three songs straight, in the middle of the empty space, with everyone wondering who this tiny little guy was. All the parents were just waiting for him to do something bad, and he just stood there, alone listening to them and watching them. The music teacher was even wide-eyed- so i'm not nuts I guess thinking he REALLY likes music.
We asked him if he wants to go to that school and he nodded, "Yep!"
I got my violin out for him tonight and he played it proudly for an hour. When I put it away he ran around saying, "OH NO! NAY NAY?!" I had to tell him that Daddy needs to go to sleep and we'll play it again in the morning.

Had lunch with Jody in York at the Harp and Fiddle Irish pub, after I dropped off 14 pieces of Irish themed art (from my Irish painting blitz) at the Studio and Art Bar. Will you be in York Saturday for the parade? stop in and check out my stuff. Andrea and Michele will have a booth at the parade too (the only booth!) check the booth too for my Irish items.
An extra special thanks to Betty tonight for buying one of my Mexican doors for a wedding gift. This was one I was considering keeping....
but oh well!!!!

I want to save some things for city shows, so at least somebody gets a surprise.

Today I listed a few things from last year on sale. I've never done that before. It's not good to have so many things sitting around, at least not in a very small Cape Cod house.

On the flip side though, I ran into another problem in that I've made some things I really want to keep for myself- so there! like my favorites. My friend Carrie told me to do that last year. Oh there are a few things I've sold I would have loved to keep. Senorita Burrita knows what I'm talkin about! Kiss those big orange doors for me.

In other news, My new RED glasses with orange in the inside of the frame from Italy's KILLER LOOP www.killerloop.com , should be ready soon for me...I can't wait!

Ice cream shop reopened.
someone is Freecycling 20+ decorating magazines to me. and I will use them in my art! (Cottage Living etc (great article on 17 women artists in the last issue, very cool),,,thank goodness these mags are on the fun side of the decorating spectrum cuz I have my share of DWELL and Architectural Digest)
65 degrees out today. went for a walk with my little buddy.
i might eat a taco tomorrow.

Bun goes bye bye

We had our good bye dinner for Bun tonight, my Thai au pair. I will miss her so much. But she is off to a good place, to care for "twins on the way!" in San Fran.

Since I am tired and sad to see her go, I just want to say this:

My au pairs are so sweet, intelligent, and interesting. And when I say that, I mean that from the depths of my soul.

If you think that foreign girls who come here are slaves and just want to get married, I challenge you to meet a few au pairs. Not only are they really cool, I look at each one of them and think that they will be something in 20 years, since they are so special now.
